Seattle Immigration Attorney Responds to Unprecedented Weekend ICE Check-ins in Tukwila, WA

This past weekend, the Seattle immigration community witnessed something unprecedented: ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) requiring individuals under supervision to report on Saturday and Sunday. As a Seattle immigration attorney with over 20 years of experience, I can confidently say this was highly unusual and concerning.

What Happened in Tukwila This Weekend

On Friday, immigrants enrolled in ICE's Intensive Supervision Appearance Program (ISAP) received sudden notifications requiring them to report to the Department of Homeland Security building in Tukwila over the weekend. This caught both the immigrant community and immigration attorneys off guard.

"I've been a lawyer for 20 years and never had a client called in on Saturday or Sunday," I told NPR when they covered this story. The timing and short notice created significant confusion and anxiety for families who were simply trying to comply with their legal obligations.

My Experience Advocating for Clients

I was present at the Tukwila DHS facility on Saturday morning to support my clients during this unprecedented situation. Of the approximately 100 people who received notices, several were detained despite having legal status in the United States through the ISAP program.

Fortunately, through advocacy and legal representation, my client was able to return home safely. "I saved one person," I reflected after the tense day. "That's all I can do today."

Why This Matters for Seattle's Immigrant Community

This incident highlights several concerning trends in current immigration enforcement:

Unpredictable Enforcement Practices

Weekend check-ins are not standard procedure. This creates fear and uncertainty in immigrant communities, even for those who are following all legal requirements.

Impact on Legal Compliance

When immigration processes become erratic and unpredictable, it can discourage immigrants from engaging with the legal system. As I noted to NPR, "I have a lot of people who start a process, and the fear gets to them. They cancel, and they say, I'm just not gonna do it. I'd rather stay in the shadows, which is so sad."

Need for Experienced Legal Representation

Events like this weekend demonstrate why having an experienced immigration attorney is crucial. The immigration system is complex and constantly changing, and having professional guidance can make the difference between detention and returning home to your family.

What This Means for Your Immigration Case

If you or a loved one are currently in immigration proceedings or under ICE supervision, it's important to:

  • Stay informed about any communications from immigration authorities

  • Respond promptly to all official notices

  • Have legal representation to navigate unexpected situations

  • Know your rights during any interactions with immigration officials
